High-level meeting on Water Safety Plans

Kampala, 28 May 2018

IHE Delft in collaboration with National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), Makerere University and EAWAG Switzerland organized a high-level meeting on Water Safety Plans (WSPs) that took place on Monday, 28 May 2018, at the NWSC International Resource Centre in Kampala.

The objectives of the meeting were: i) to understand roles and responsibilities of different actors in developing and implementing WSPs in Uganda; ii) to share experiences and lessons learned from 15 years of WSP development and implementation; and iii) to devise a joint strategy for scaling up WSPs.

"The meeting was opened by IHE Delft Alumna Ms. Florence Grace Adongo, Director of Water Resources Management of the Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE), followed by presentations given by Dr. Giuliana Ferrero of IHE Delft, Ms. Lillian Idrakua, Commissioner of Water Quality Management of the Directorate of Water Resources Management, Mr. Christopher Kanyesigye of NWSC, both Alumni of IHE Delft, Eng. Godfrey Hashakimana, Mrs. Julia B. Kamara of the Directorate of Water Development of the MWE."

During the second half of the meeting stakeholders participated in a focus group discussion. The main topics discussed were the current status of WSP implementation, the challenges encountered, the strategies to improve implementation, financial implications of scaling up WSP, and roles and responsibilities with regard to monitoring and verification (auditing).

The meeting was organized in the framework of project SMALL: water supply and sanitation in small towns, sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands under the DGIS-IHE Delft Programmatic Cooperation.
